Wow! Fire this evening in my apartment building -- alarms and everything. Grabbed my cats, stuffed them in carriers, grabbed my poetry book and laptop and headed to the car (down the stairs) -- drove out. Waited in the parking lot of the nearby grocery store; watched a lot of firemen with equipment enter the building. Then saw a hose come out of a second storey window (I'm on the third floor), and a lot of water pour out of it. Saw a waterfall cascading out of this apartment's other windows. That is some hell of a sprinkler system. Walked over to ask if it was safe to return, got the ok. Was on the phone with Brent the whole time.
Drove back in, went up the elevator with the cats, books, etc. There was a waterfall escaping between the brickwork in the garage, two floors below the apartment that was flooded. This place wasn't built well. None of the walls are square, nothing flush, nothing plumb. I worry about instability, now.
The downside to apartment living in the city.
In my first medicine rotation. A last fling with Susan -- went to see a musical, based on a Jazz Era poem -- Sunday night. Anesthesia was highly educational. Medicine is the same, already. Need to review Addison's disease, chronic renal failure, clinical pathology. Will need to review a lot more before the end of it.
Up early tomorrow. Hope the water is back on.
Hope there's never a fire when I'm not able to evacuate my beloved cats. Maybe I'll look into a house, instead.
